Is lying acceptable?

Is lying permissible? If so, when? If not, why not?

Growing up children are taught not to lie. Parents, guardians, teachers, they all say

that if we lie we will get in trouble. However, as we grow older, lying becomes easier for some

people. We all eventually have lied at some point in our lives. Is it okay to lie? We were all

taught that morally, it’s not okay. But for some people, lying comes as easy as eating cake.

They feel as if lying is a norm. Many people tend to feel this way because they have not had to

face any consequences when lying. I agree that it is permissible to lie when necessary. If

someone is in a life or death situation, lying would be acceptable. In addition to that, I believe

if a lie does not harm anyone, then it is also acceptable. For example, someone can plan a

surprise for their loved one. In the process of doing so, they lie to their loved one; the end

result doesn’t seem to be a bad one here. As a result, no one is hurt and the lie did not do any

harm. The truth is always the right way to go. However, there are people that don’t believe in

telling the truth. Some people even lie to a great extent. These people are considered

compulsive liars. Compulsive lying is the act of lying to the extreme. Some compulsive liars

may lie for attention, some for no reason at all. These are some of the factors we must

consider when deciding if it is permissible to lie or not.

Thank you for sharing your ideas about lying Ashley. They are thoughtful. At the same time, how would your discussion of lying change if you were to add Henry? Did Henry lie out of necessity? What was going on during that time that made it necessary to lie about gender? Was his lie harmful? If so, who could it have harmed?

Please think about these questions as you develop your response. Also, where in the novel did Henry explain why he felt it necessary to lie?

I look forward to your response.
