Good Lord Bird Questions

  1. What is Owen’s response to Fred?

  1. Who does Onion travel with? Onion travels with Nigger Bob after the Brown's go to the river to get their "claim". Nigger bob and Onion are "taken" by Chase and Randy.

  1. Who owns Pikesville Hotel? Miss Abby owns the Hotel, a white pro-slaver.

  1. Who is Chase and Randy? Chase and Randy are the two men Onion and Nigger Bob traveled with. They are both pro-slavers. Randy was wanted for something he did and so he ran the chance he got. Chase stayed with Onion and Nigger Bob to get his profit from them. " 'What about the girl?' [Referring to Onion] Chase said. 'Miss Abby could use her. Wouldn't that square us?' " (McBride 133). Chase was referring to the money he owed Pie.

  1. Map out Pikesville Hotel in terms of rank and class. "The Pikesville was a high-class hotel and saloon compared to the previous two shitholes that I aforementioned, but I ought to say here that looking back, it weren't much better. Only after I seen dwellings in the East did I learn that the finest hotel in Pikesville was ma pigsty compared to the lowliest flophouse in Boston" (McBride 131). From this quote, I would put Pikesville Hotel in the middle class because Onion describes this to be one of the best hotels he had stayed at but later finding out that it wasn't all that.

  1. Who is Sibonia? Sibonia is one of the slaves that is kept in the back of the hotel. She seems to have some type of mental issue. "Bob nodded at Sibonia.'That one there, she's a witch. She's under a mad spell' "(McBride 156). This describes how her behavior reflects that of a "mad" person.

  1. Who is Pie? Pie is a negro prostitute. She works in the hotel for Miss Abby. Pie collects her own profit and is Miss Abby's "star". Pie also covers for Onion when she finds out he is a boy. She helps Onion get a job in the hotel.

  1. Who is Darg? Drag is a big negro that is in charge of the yard. ".. he was raw powerful, and looked big enough to pick up a house"(McBride 156). Everyone seems to be scared of him because of the way he looks.

Reading Log Questions

1. Who is Kelly?

Kelly was a slave owner. He had Pardee, an elderly white man as his prisoner. " 'Okay, Padree," he said. 'We gonna try you right here.' (Padree replys) 'Kelly, I already told you I weren't a Yank' .." This dialogue shows that Kelly is the one that is giving Padree the orders. Meaning he is in control.

2. Who are the Red Shirts?

The Red Shirts are the pro slavers. These people are looking for John Brown. Nigger Bob explains to Onion that they're looking for John Brown. " 'Every redshirt within a hundred miles is rolling these plains for him (John Brown)' " (Mcbride 63).

3. Who is Nigger Bob?

Nigger Bob is the slave that was driving the wagon around for Kelly. " '... this here wagon belongs to Marse Jack Settles. And he ain't give me no permission to ride nobody in it. I done what Mr. Kelly said 'cause I had to..." (Mcbride 60). This shows that Nigger Bob is a slave and he was driving around Kelly because he had to.

Is lying permissible? If so, when? If not, why not?

Growing up children are taught not to lie. Parents, guardians, teachers, they all say

that if we lie we will get in trouble. However, as we grow older, lying becomes easier for some

people. We all eventually have lied at some point in our lives. Is it okay to lie? We were all

taught that morally, it’s not okay. But for some people, lying comes as easy as eating cake.

They feel as if lying is a norm. Many people tend to feel this way because they have not had to

face any consequences when lying. I agree that it is permissible to lie when necessary. If

someone is in a life or death situation, lying would be acceptable. In addition to that, I believe

if a lie does not harm anyone, then it is also acceptable. For example, someone can plan a

surprise for their loved one. In the process of doing so, they lie to their loved one; the end

result doesn’t seem to be a bad one here. As a result, no one is hurt and the lie did not do any

harm. The truth is always the right way to go. However, there are people that don’t believe in

telling the truth. Some people even lie to a great extent. These people are considered

compulsive liars. Compulsive lying is the act of lying to the extreme. Some compulsive liars

may lie for attention, some for no reason at all. These are some of the factors we must

consider when deciding if it is permissible to lie or not.

About Me

Getting to Know Me

1. If you play a sport, what type of sport do you play? How long have you been playing this sport?

When I was younger I played soccer. However, I no longer participate in sports.

2. What are you passionate about? For example, in your free time, what do you enjoy doing the most?

In my free time I like to watch a lot of movies and shows. It's kind of like an escape for me.

3. What THE MOST ridiculous lie you ever told? Why did you tell this lie?

I want to say the last time I lied was when I said "sorry I thought I replied", whenever I would just forget to answer. It's certainly not the most ridiculous lie I've ever told, but I don't remember any ridiculous lies.

4. When you write, do you just sit at the computer and allow the words to flow or do you have an outline?

When I write, my method of writing usually changes with my mood. Sometimes, the words flow right through me, while other times I need to have an outline to guide myself through it.

5. How would you describe your writing experience so far? What do you most want to learn from this course?

My writing experience has been pleasant. I have grown a lot as a writer but I would still like to grow more.

6. What was the name of the most recent book you've read from cover to cover?

I honestly don't remember he most recent book I've read from cover to cover. I did start reading a book before the semester start. However, I had to stop because I have a lot of reading to do this semester.

7. How often do you write on social media: Face book, twitter, Snap Chat, Instagram?

I usually do not write much on my social media. I watch videos, or look at other peoples post.

8. What is most import for you to learn this semester?

This semester I hope to learn how to prepare myself ahead of time for all the work that I will have to do.

9. What is your definition of a hero?

A hero to me would be someone who comforts. Someone who protects you and makes you feel safe. I would say kind of like parents. They're always there to help you feel safe and help pick you up. That's what a real hero is.

10. When was the last time you failed at something? What did you learn from this experience?

I absolutely HATE failing. I feel like everyone around me gets disappointed. This is why I always try my best at things. Last semester, I earn two C. To me, that was failing. I felt this way because I knew I could have done better. I have learned to always put my best foot forward. This semester I am not taking any chances.

11. Rate yourself as a writer: A, B, C, or D. Explain why.

I would consider myself to be in between a B and an A because I feel that I structure my papers correctly and I put all the information necessary. However, I know there's always room to grow.
